oRIGINS AND INSTITUTIONAL PURPOSE
Established in 2011 in Brazil, The World Education Fund (WEF) was founded with a clear and enduring objective: to strengthen nations through education. From its inception, the organization was conceived not as a local initiative, but as a global fund dedicated to fostering knowledge, human capital development, and long-term institutional stability.
While its early operations were conducted under the designation WEF Brasil, the institutional vision has always been international in scope, with the long-term objective of establishing its global headquarters in Geneva and expanding structured representation across regions.
Education as the Foundation of Prosperity
The name The World Education Fund reflects its core conviction: sustainable prosperity begins with education.
International assessments conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development through the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) consistently demonstrate the strong correlation between educational performance, productivity, innovation capacity, and long-term economic development.
Nations that invest strategically in knowledge formation, critical thinking, and institutional quality create the conditions necessary for social mobility and sustainable wealth generation. WEF was established upon this premise: that improving education is the most effective structural path to strengthening economies and elevating societies.
Institutional Model and Partnerships
WEF operates as a fund for the promotion and development of educational initiatives. Its partnerships function at both ends of its mission:
- Resource partners — including individuals, entrepreneurs, corporations, governments, foundations, and philanthropic funds — contribute to the financial sustainability of projects.
- Beneficiary institutions — schools, educational institutes, and nonprofit organizations — collaborate in the implementation of programs.
All institutional partners are considered natural members of the International Education Society (IES), a framework through which WEF promotes cooperation, accountability, and socially responsible engagement in education.
From National Operation to Global Architecture
Throughout its history, WEF experienced phases of expansion, contraction, and renewal, influenced by economic cycles and global disruptions. Yet its founding vision remained unchanged.
As of 2023, a renewed strategic effort has reactivated and strengthened the organization’s original objectives. The current phase marks the implementation of the WEF Global Architecture — a structured model designed to enable regional representation, institutional governance, and scalable international partnerships.
Within this framework, WEF advances a federated structure designed to support coordinated regional presence. The World Education Fund operates through WEF Global, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland — a historic center of international institutions — alongside WEF Africa in Nairobi, WEF USA in New York, and WEF Brasil in São Paulo, ensuring both global alignment and regional continuity in program implementation.
This phase also includes the development of the Global Education Impact Facility (GEIF), conceived as a strategic mechanism to mobilize resources, align stakeholders, and support high-impact educational initiatives across regions.
